It's Summer Time - Come and Join Us

Ah, it’s Summer Time

Yes, the ‘Dog Days of Summer’-- those lazy hazy days from July 6th on to the early part of August have almost passed.  That is not to say the Pacific Ski Club has been down at Wreck Beach all of the time.  Yet, I must say, it’s nice to see so many of our past club members who still make the trek down Nature Trail #6 to enjoy one of the 20 best beaches in the world.

Summer means no monthly club nights, but we are busy, nonetheless.

  • Thursday evenings we have golf driving range nights at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Club,
  • we have biking trips in and around Vancouver,
  • local walking and hiking tours,
  • our Annual PSC Golf Classic is on August 12th c/w a summer BBQ in Larry & Betty Walker's vast back yard with Bocce, Horse Shoe games, fire pits, guitar sing-a-longs and friends to which anyone can come –non golfers pay a small fee, but you must call Bruce Chadwick  (see our Web site for the contact) if you plan to join us.

We are going camping for the long weekend again this September, August 31 to September 2 to be exact.  For you retirees, you can always drive up on the Thursday, August 30 and stay the Monday, September 3 to avoid the mad rush.  I’ll send out another e-mail once the location is confirmed, but get/ keep your camping out.  We will post that very soon.

The 2017/ 18 Ski Season & Our Annual General Meeting

What a great ski season it was, and we must thank our Sister Club, the Victoria Alpine Ski Club, for much of the work in bringing these excellent ski trip to fruition.

The PSC started off with a December Legends ski trip, then on January 7th members from both ski clubs left for Romania and our 2018 Ski Europe Trip.  Arriving on the orthodox church's Christmas Day, we were able to enjoy a second Christmas dinner at the local hotel in Transylvania.  A live band, a dance floor, a very tall decorated Christmas tree and a very short time to order food before the kitchen closed for the night was the order of the first evening.

Poiana Brasov saw little in fresh snow, but they had many new lifts which were not there when we last visited in 2004.  Sinaia had so much new snow that the lifts were closed for a few days so that they could shovel out.
Many of us toured Brasov, Transylvania’s capitol with the Black Church, the aerial tram, the St. Catherine’s Gate, the Town Hall and its Christmas market.  We also took in Rasanov and Bran Castles, both from the 14th Century.  All in all, it was a most memorable journey to one of the most eastern parts of Europe, excluding Turkey, where they have ski resorts.  Yes, Romania is still many years back from what modern Canadian ski resorts are, but they are moving forward and things are much better than they were just a few years ago.

There was a Nelson, White Water and a Rossland, Red Mountain interior ski trip, a Whistler week-long trip and four more three day trips to Whistler, the last being back at Legends in April.  You can still hit the slopes at Blackcomb as the glaciers are open until late June!

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for June 21st, the 3rd Thursday in June 2018.  This time we will hold it at one of our member’s homes, namely my residence in Delta.

Date: June 21, 2018
Time: Cocktails - 5:30pm until the AGM with a 7:15 to 7:30 p.m. start
Location: 11488 86th Avenue,
                   Delta, B.C. V4C 2X2

Awards, BBQ, Prizes, Bocci, and campfires afterward.

Hope to see you all there.

Past members welcome to the party and BBQ, for a $5.00/ person food charge.  You cannot, however, speak or vote at the AGM.

President's December 30th, 2017 Blog

Let’s hope y’all had a very Merry Christmas 2017!

Our calendar year is almost at an end and 2018 is at the door.  Yet, the ski season has just begun, we just had a White Christmas, have gone to Whistler December 8 – 11 and there are so many more ski trips ahead.

January 7th, two ski trips leave the Vancouver/ Victoria Area.  Ten of us are off to Romania to ski the Transylvanian Alps for 14 days.  On the same day, a different group is off to Silver Star for a 5 night ski vacation.  Nathalie has one ticket for the Silver Star trip, January 7-12, 2018, so it is not Sold Out. Contact: Nathalie Laurence or Ron Stengler:

I would like to thank everyone who participated for the great effort of raising $544.00 for the Christmas Bureau.  It went to families with the most need and was appreciated more that you can imagine.  Congratulations to Doreen Smith, who, through her generous donations to the Pub Crawl and the Christmas Bureau drive, won the draw.  All prizes and gifts for the Christmas Bureau Pub Crawl and Christmas Party were donated by: and 100% of the money collected went to the Greater Vancouver Christmas Bureau.  A job well done!!!

If you joined the ski club to snowboard or ski, come on and get on board(s)!  Click on and pick out a ski trip and give the coordinator listed a call or e-mail.  It is just that easy, but you must be a member of the ski club to participate. No exceptions.

Ski y’all in the New Year!

PSC Christmas Party January 21, 2017

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," especially in the higher elevations and at my place on the North Pole(North Delta).  We had over 3cm of fresh snow by 12:30 today and it's expected to continue until about 20:40 tonight.  With cooler dry air expected over the next few days, we could well have snow on the ground for our 2017 Pacific Ski Club Christmas Party.
Pacific Ski Club Christmas Party,
Thursday, December 21st, 2017
TOBY's Pub, 2733 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.
Time 6:30pm.

Bring your best Christmas spirit and attire.  There will be prizes for the best Male & Female Christmas outfit as well as several others, including our wine draw.

Bonus - We will be raffling off the tax receipt for the Christmas Bureau donation of 2017.  With the PSC members who came along on our Annual Christmas Bureau Pub Crawl, and the help of other members since, we handed $474.00 to the Greater Vancouver Christmas Bureau last Friday.  This is the minimum value to the Tax Receipt that will be issued to the winner of that draw.  To be in the pot, you need to donate a minimum of $10.00 to our charity drive this Thursday.  All donations for that draw on December 21, 100% of it, also goes to the Christmas Bureau and will add to that pot.  We already have one member in that draw through Richard's generous donation.  Take the time to help those in need.
